The Film : Pandemic: Facing AIDS is a feature-length documentary that takes a unique look at the AIDS pandemic, melting intimate personal stories with a global perspective. The film will premiere June 15, 2003 at 7 P.M. on HBO. Press Release.
 
The Book : Pandemic: Facing AIDS (Umbrage Editions, 2003) is a powerful collection of images from the global AIDS pandemic over the last twenty years. The book’s 256 pages contain 200 black-and-white and color photographs. Representing nearly fifty countries, the more than 100 award-winning international artists and photographers include: Aleksandr Glyadyelov, Anita Khemka, Kent Klich, Antonin Kratochvil, Robert Mapplethorpe, Gideon Mendel, Duane Michals, Paolo Pellegrin, Gilles Peress, Pierre et Gilles, and Cindy Sherman. Also featured are essays by UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, Nobel-prize-winning novelist Nadine Gordimer, filmmaker Rory Kennedy, editor and curator Nan Richardson, and leading global economist Jeffrey Sachs. The Exhibit : Pandemic: Facing AIDS is a traveling exhibition of over 100 original photo-based works by award-winning photographers and artists from over fifty countries. Presenting twenty years of the photographic response to the pandemic, the collection tours internationally through 2005, beginning with a launch at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Barcelona, during the International AIDS Conference in July 2002, The National Museum of Art, Pretoria, South Africa, and the United Nations. The exhibition continues to other prominent venues around the world, including the United Nations, in conjunction with World AIDS Day observances. Press Release.
 
About Pandemic: Facing AIDS
 
The Pandemic: Facing AIDS Project is a multi-faceted outreach campaign aimed at raising awareness of the global AIDS crisis through a variety of cultural and education projects. Project components include:
  • A documentary film, Pandemic: Facing AIDS theatrically released and broadcast on HBO in the U.S. and on other channels internationally.
  • A book, Pandemic: Facing AIDS, presenting 200 color and black-and-white photographs by one hundred international photographers, and including essays by Kofi Annan, Nadine Gordimer, Rory Kennedy, Nan Richardson, and Jeffrey Sachs.
  • A traveling exhibition, Pandemic: Imaging AIDS, including one hundred works by major award-winning photographers and artists representing fifty countries, documenting twenty years of AIDS. The exhibition tours internationally to Barcelona, South Africa, New York, Paris, Moscow, Washington, and Rio de Janeiro, among other venues.
  • An education packet distributed to schools, NGOs, community groups, and government agencies around the world.
  • A website, www.pandemicfacingaids.org, developed in partnership with AOL Time Warner, integrating the interviews, photographs, and educational elements of the project with web-based policy links, information resources and action tools.
  • Alternate versions of the film, including full-length translations (in process) for use around the world, a forty-two minute educational version video, a twenty-minute version for policymakers, and six public service announcements.
  • A smaller version of the exhibition with 30 images for educational venues, sponsored by Pfizer Foundation, tours to thirty venues to date.
  • The CD, Pandemic: Music for a World without AIDS, including world music from a variety of artists including Orchestra Marrabenta Star de Mocambique, Ravi Shankar and Philip Glass, Miriam Cutler, Gabriela Anders, Gilberto Gil, Bill Frisell, Morcheeba, Me’Shell Ndegeócello, Lou Reed, Brad Mehldau, Margaret Boogre and the Uganda Orphans Choir, Caetano Veloso, Yaya³, Euge Groove, and Take 6.
